Tuition Scholarships:

The Department of Philosophy awards tuition scholarships to Philosophy Majors. The scholarships can be awarded to continuing U of Utah students, as well as to new students. The scholarships cover tuition up to a maximum of 18 credit hours per semester, for the Fall and Spring semesters.

Eligibility: Applicants must declare Philosophy as their Major. Applicants must have a minimum overall GPA of at least 3.5. Applicants must enroll for at least 12 credits in both the Fall and Spring semesters of the academic year in which they would receive the award.

Application: Print the appropriate application form: (a) application for students already declared as Philosophy Majors at U of Utah; (b) application for transfer students and high school students. Return the completed application to the Philosophy Department.

Whisner/Appleby Scholarship:

The Whisner/Appleby scholarship memorializes the lives of Professors Peter Appleby and William Whisner. The scholarship awards $4,000 to a student majoring in philosophy, to be used for tuition and books.

The scholarship is need-based, where financial "need" is determined by the Office of Financial Aid. Applicants must be enrolled as full-time students (12 hours or more) for both the Fall and Spring terms of the scholarship period, and they should have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0. Additionally, applicants are to submit a personal statement. (See the application form for further details about the financial need qualification, as well as the personal statement.)
