Phil 3200 - Deductive Logic
Instructor: Lex
Newman
A detailed syllabus of the course will be forthcoming, namely at the start of the semester.
In the mean time, I want to make a comment about the course text that you should be buying.
It is not uncommon for students to try, and indeed to succeed, in buying the
course texts used. This often makes a great deal of sense.
But for this course, you must buy the textbook new. Here's
why. The textbook comes with software that you will use to submit all of
the course homeworks. The problem is that only one student can register
the software, per book — period. So, if you buy the textbook used,
not only do you run the risk that the software won't be intact, you will be
unable to register the software and, therefore, unable to turn in your
homework.
In buying it new, you will probably be able to save a significant amount of money
by buying the text new from Amazon. Here are a couple of links to online venders
of the textbook:
Because Deductive Logic is a technical course, it fulfills the Quantitative Reasoning GenEd
requirement. The text we're using is large and it covers a lot of advanced ground. We will not use
all of the text, but will only cover the material appropriate to a beginning course in formal logic.
The text comes with multiple software programs. Not only do these programs enable students to know
whether their homework problems are correct, more importantly it provides very useful feedback that
allows one to more effectively learn the course material. The software will run on either a PC or a MAC.
