Departmental Awards

All Department of Philosophy scholarships for the 26-27 academic year will be routed through a single application posted here: Liberal Arts and Sciences Scholarship Application. Through this application, you will be reviewed for up to 250 scholarships across the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences for the 26-27 academic year. Liberal Arts and Sciences Scholarship Application 

 


Below is a list of scholarships from the Department of Philosophy:

For each listed scholarship below, please submit a personal statement (discussing the value Philosophy has to you, as well as the specific focus of the scholarship), a resume, and a transcript of the previous 2 years of coursework.  You must be a declared Philosophy Major in order to be able to apply to these scholarships. 
 

David Wells Bennett Scholarship: $2000

The David Wells Bennett scholarship is a merit based scholarship. The scholarship awards $2000 to a student majoring in philosophy, to be used for tuition and books.

There are two requirements you must meet to qualify for consideration for this scholarship.

1. You are a philosophy major who will enroll full-time ( at least 12 hours per semester) in the 2026-2027 academic year.

2. You  have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 (academic merit is the focus of this scholarship).

 

Magleby Scholarship: $1000

The Magleby Scholarship is a leadership-focused scholarship. The scholarship awards $1000 to a student majoring in philosophy, to be used for tuition and books.

There are three main requirements you must meet for consideration for this scholarship:

    1. You are a Philosophy Major who will enroll fulltime ( ≥ 12 hours, per sem.) in the 2026-2027 academic year.
    2. You have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0.
    3. In addition to your personal statement, answer the following questions: "what are your aspirations in leadership for the future, and how will understanding Philosophy impact your ability to be a successful leader? How do your current activities and achievements (philosophical or non-philosophical) support your aspirations toward developing a career in leadership?"

 

Whisner-Appleby Scholarship: $4000

The Whisner/Appleby scholarship is a need-based scholarship that memorializes the lives of Professors Peter Appleby and William Whisner. The scholarship awards $4,000 to a student majoring in philosophy, to be used for tuition and books.

There are three main requirements you must meet for consideration for this scholarship:

1. You are philosophy major who will enroll full-time (at least 12 hours per semester) in the 2026 - 2027 academic year.

2. You have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0.

3. You are a member of an underrepresented group. You must show documented financial need (usually through a Financial Needs Based Analysis) and/or membership in/contributions to under-represented or underprivileged groups.

 


Philosophy Undergraduate Travel Funds

Philosophy undergraduate travel awards vary and our based-on funding availability. We encourage all Philosophy affiliated undergraduates to apply. We encourage applications as soon as conference/workshop announcements are made.
