"First and foremost, my philosophy training taught me how to critically think. I learned the importance of finding the right question to ask, and I was forced to become comfortable with the fact that sometimes the right question can't be answered. Specifically, I wouldn't be where I am today without the guidance and encouragement of philosophy profs who stoked my passion for evolutionary theory and gave me the skills to engage in that passion academically. Matt Haber taught me how to be an academic, and how to conduct research. Erin Beeghly taught me how to craft an argument and write well. Steve Downs, Melinda Fagan, and Carlos Santana taught me how to do formal logic and epistemology. All of these things make up the foundation of who I am as a scholar and a thinker, and they give me a unique perspective that most of my colleagues don't have. Lastly, saying that I have formal training in philosophy makes people think I'm smarter than I am. this is useful for networking."
